RICHMOND BRANCH - 99 YEARS HELPING to SHAPE the FUTURE for WOMEN
Throughout the early days of its history, the Richmond Branch was a dominant force in opening higher education to women, UVA being one example. Always in support of public education, the Branch spoke out during the days of “massive resistance” to integrated public schools. These early members helped to place the first nurses in the schools and convinced doctors to volunteer their time. A public library for Richmond was a “must” and the list goes on.AAUW, the FOREMOST ORGANIZATION PROMOTING EQUITY Today, the Richmond Branch upholds this legacy of advocacy for the advancement of all women and girls. In addition to monthly programs related to the AAUW mission, the Branch sponsors projects and forums, often in coalition with other organizations. Examples are:
and EDUCATION for WOMEN
A Public Forum on the Welfare to Work Program. Is it working?
A Tribute to Maggie Walker - Community Program to bring Richmond women together through a common bond. Held at Maggie’s church, William H. Sydnor, author of the prize winning TV video on her life, will share what he learned about this remarkable African American pioneer whose uncanny insights and effective leadership made such an impact on Richmond
A District Program with Panel on Community Domestic Violence Issues
Richmond Immigrants Tell Their Stories- plus ethnic food tasting.
Title IX, Where Are We After 30 Years?
The Branch helps the AAUW Educational Foundation raise millions of dollars for post graduate grants and scholarships, transition grants for career change or women returning to school; grants for innovative projects in the community or schools which are related to girls, as well as groundbreaking research.
Raising money for the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, which supports women fighting sex discrimination in institutions of higher learning, is also a priority.
You will find members lobbying their legislators on matters significant to women and their families.
Active study and interest groups, such as fine arts, public policy, bridge and book group; discussions on issues of current concern, and a lunch bunch, help members continue their education and enjoy interacting with one another.
The Richmond Branch is an age and racially integrated branch which welcomes women from all cultural backgrounds who have a 4 year college degree. Students in 2 or 4 year accredited institutions may become Student Affiliates.
Most programs are open to the public. If you believe in our mission, please pay us a visit; contact our membership chair.
